Don’t even mention it on the FP lest they tear you apart like that bear would.

My generation TL had a 5-speed auto at the beginning of this decade. Have I mentioned that Acura’s goal with it was to be a more serious competitor to Ze Germans? How you gonna do that with a 5-speed auto in 2010? They wised up and put a 6-speed auto in it with the 2012 facelift.

I have a “ dogleg 5speed” card I can play if need be.

Hmm let’s see. 5 speed manual, 4 speed manual. Might as well be walking I suppose.
(ok, fine if you count our Volvo, that’s a 6-speed auto)

And they probably all can shift through every gear faster than my C6 can do 1-2.

Years ago at a car show I saw a stunning Aston Martin with a sign listing its many attributes, one of which was an absurdly high number of gears for its automatic transmission. Memory says 14 but I suspect that’s just my usual terrible recall.
Anyway, I found it amusing that anyone would brag about having an automatic transmission instead of hanging their head in shame, but I guess that’s the world for you: full of people with weird priorities.

T he best experience I have had, (i. e. it shifted when I think it should) automatic was a traditional 4spd automatic in a 2005 Nissan Altima. Hammer it and it drops down quickly then upshifts when it should . Putt around town and it’s in top gear. Could mileage been better with an extra couple cogs - sure. But the shift mapping and execution was spot on. 1st runner up - 4 spd in a post Acura refresh Isuzu Trooper with “sport” mode on. Again, quick and intuitive downshifts making the most of what power was available.

Three of my bicycles are 10 speed manual but one is a 20 speed manual with a maximum gear spread of somewhere around 460% ...so I win this stupid argument. Unless one of you lot is sporting a triple crankset on your bike and a 10-46 rear cassette

That 5 speed was still available in the Jeep Wrangler until the JK died last year. The *same* transmission in the SLR was in the Je ep Wrangler just 2 years after the SLR was killed.

Somehow that doesn’t surprise me as much as the transmission being in the SLR to begin with.
The TL thing, for me, seemed to be a point of arrogance of the company. The 3rd gen, especially the Type S, was a popular car, but missing just a little something to challenge the 5 series and E-class and A6. For the 4th gen, they did some things right, making the car more upscale inside, adding a great AWD system as an option, and squeezing even more power out of the J-series V6, but then they decided to use basically the same transmission as the previous generation had when the by-then-ancient E60 5-series had already been using a 6-speed auto since its inception. Even Infiniti and Lexus had 6-speed autos at that point. And then you had the F10 5-series come out the next year with the ZF 8HP. Combine that with the hideous original beak and it’s no wonder sales tumbled. They added a manual option in 2010, and the merciful redesign and 6-speed auto in 2012, but too little too late. That said, I love my 2012. But I would only buy an 09-11 as a project.

I’ m guessing the profit margins on the SLR were insane, since the transmisson is obviously a cheap old part and IIRC the chassis was SL-based. It does look awesome, though.
Acura has always felt a bit half assed to me. Heavily based on Hondas and nothing really stand out except their AWD system . I’ve always seen them as a Japanese Lincoln- decent ‘ affordable luxury’ c ars with polarizing looks, awful names and nothing very exciting going on under the hood (NSX doesn’t count, that’s a Honda and everyone knows it ).
![]() 01/30/2019 at 23:52 |

I’m in the minority that hates the SLR’s looks. Never been a fan of the front clip.
I agree to an extent on Acura; I think they’ve had some (key word some) genuinely good cars over the years, even a couple this decade. But you’re right, most of the platforms have been based on their Honda brethren, though they seem to be getting away from that a little bit. Maybe they’re finally starting to realize that isn’t going to cut it in this crowded market and their sales fell for a reason. The new RDX is getting good reviews and it’s something I’d consider in the future. However, that’s it for their current lineup. Having driven two TLXs, I can say that one of those would be a downgrade from my TL; the ILX is still literally a previous-gen Civic in a suit despite all the changes made over the years; the MDX and RLX are too big for me; and the NSX is basically a homologation special.

I can see why you don’t like it, but imo it looks better than the Ferrari 599 (and the Enzo) , though not as good as the Ford GT from the era . It was the only good looking Me rcedes at a time when Mercedes was making some shit cars- all their AMG models had that 5 speed and it was not keeping up with manuals *or* DCTs at the time.
U nlike a lot of people, I don’t care if a car shares a platform with another car if the platform is good. VW/Audi know how to stretch a platform from a Volkswagen to an Audi to a Bentley and they make it work. But they all need distinct styling and engines and Acuras simply don’t seem very different in that aspect.
But t he worst thing about Acura is their naming scheme. I know the TL, but I don’t know where the RDX or MDX sit in the lineup without looking it up . I looked it up and now know that they end *every* model name with X. LX means sedan and DX means SUV. ILX, TLX and RLX are their sedan names. RDX and MDX are their SUVs. How did they come up with that? HOW? How can you get consumers to remember your cars if enthusiasts can’t even remember what you call your cars?

I agree with you on Acura’s naming scheme not making much sense. Most of the other brands’ alphanumerics give you at least a little bit of a guide as to which one is the entry level and where to go up from there. I’m not even sure what they’d be named if they had real names, aside from the ILX being the Integra (it picked up the chassis codes when it was introduced) and the RLX being the Legend, which it still is overseas.
